Maritime Angel - Belfast, Maine

This maritime angel stands in Belfast, Maine. She clutches the chain of the anchor beside her (a portion of it has broken off), a common symbol in Victorian funerary sculpture, to denote hope as mentioned in Hebrews: " we have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure". Since Belfast, Maine has a rich maritime history, it is highly likely this grand monument was purchased by someone who made a living at sea. This image is affixed to luminous film so it glows in the dark.

Recording Angel - Farmington, ME On sale, as it has a post-production imperfection. Nothing that interferes with the art and isn't very noticeable. Crack along the top of the frame from screwing the hanger on to the frame. Looks like it hit a knot in the wood, causing it to split a little. My loss, your gain!

Angel With Harp - Belfast, ME

This is the first time using this particular image. She resides in the Grove Cemetery close to the Angel of Contemplation and Maritime Angel in Belfast. She is missing her pinkie finger, but I managed to draw one on. This often happens to the more delicate details of these sculptures as they are often in the oldest part of the cemetery where they're at the mercy of falling limbs from old trees.

About the Angels of Maine

All the statuary imagery in this series is taken from cemeteries throughout Maine. Handmade transfers from my original photos are sealed into wooden shadowboxes, where I use hand-made Japanese and Indian papers, along with other ephemera and found objects to create one-of-kind pieces. Sizes are 4"x8" and 5"x9".
